Chocolate Raspberry Liquid Stevia!

had a bad experience today; I went to Costco to buy those huge packs of boca burgers only to discover that particular Costco didn’t even carry them!  Plus no samples! That’s what I get for going on weekday.  On my way home, I passed buy a natural food market. Not like whole foods, but more like those hippie, organic, herb-loving, co-op type shop.  I really just went in to browse or maybe find an item or two to review if it wasn’t too pricey.  Lo and behold I found something I was super curious about because stevia had been getting lots of buzz lately.  Stevia is the sugar alternative, alternative. A weird concept, really.  Actually its considered a dietary supplement, so don’t think you’ll be seeing them in little packets at Starbucks anytime soon.  According to sweetleaf, the company that produces many stevia packets and this liquid version I bought, its all natural, zero calories, zero sugar, etc… I am so skeptical of all these claims and the “all natural” claim on top of that! Not that I am seeking all natural products 100% of time, but I feel that an artificial artificial sweetener is bound to have some “un-natural” properties. Anyhow, I was honestly not quite sure what to do with it once I got it. It was a silly impulse buy and on the way home started think, what could I use this for??? The company suggested “As a supplement, add nutritious stevia to water, tea, coffee, milk, sparkling water, protein shakes, plain yogurt or anything else you can imagine.Refrigerate after opening to extend freshness.”.  Hmm ok, but first, I must taste it alone. And o man, maybe I shouldn’t have. It taste like raspberry flavored Robitussin. Bleh, my face squirmed in an undesirable, unattractive way (good thing no hot guys were in the vicinity).  Alright, but I figured, vanilla extract, although smells nice, taste terrible on its own (and yes, I’ve tried it straight up many times, they us it in the “blind” product identification tests we have weekly in culinary school).  Its too hot for my coffee fix, o I thought about blending it in yogurt.  I but some in Fage and I must say it wasn’t too bad. Chocolaty? No way, they can forget that title, but it did add a little dimension and some moderate sweetness to the otherwise tart Fage.  Don’t confuse this splenda or equal, stevia tastes nothing like them (not necessarily better, but not worse, very odd almost alcohol type sweetness).  I’ll try this maybe in my next batch of sugar cookies and let you know how it turned out. Overall grade: B, not terrible when blended, horrifying on it’s own, weary claims, but if the claims hold true, impressive.

Stevia costs way too much

Stevia costs way too much for what it does add to that that the only places I've seen the stuff for sale are at the holier than thou local health markets equals no more stevia for me.

I tried the stuff in baking and it turned out well(not great but not bad either ) , but the stevia I used was the plain variety.

Better flavors

I've been experimenting with this type of thing over the last few months, since I really like to add flavors to meringues, cookies, shakes, etc. The best I've found are at http://capellaflavordrops.com/ and https://www.lorannoils.com/c-2-lorann-gourmet.aspx. Let me know if you're interested, and I can post more details later. I will say that these flavors are what makes dieting bearable!!

Interesting...i would only

Interesting...i would only use i for flavor, i dont think as a sweetner. I spoke to my baking instructor actually on sweetners. Its a werid concept, i dont like replacing sugar with artificial or even stevia sweetners. For chemistry sake, it just usually does not produce a good product. Thats why i like fruit as your main sweetner when it comes to desserts. For example, there is so much natural pectin in berries, that for fruit sauces, i really dont need much sweetening or thickening up because the pectin makes it so thick and rich!

I'm not really a big fan of

I'm not really a big fan of Stevia. I'll use it if its the only thing around, but if you use too much it creates a really bitter taste. At least to me it does. It's ok as a sweetener, when nothings around though. But I must admit..I'm partial to my sweet n low! (hey they did take the little red warning off about cancer in lab rats! so..must be safe? haha)

Also, take into consideration diabetics, sugar is a no no. and Splenda is SCARY stuff, it turns to sludge in your intestines and stays with you, its horrible stuff. So I think this is a better alternative. Ugh I hate Splenda!!

Where did you hear about

Where did you hear about splenda turning into sludge and staying with you, because that sounds like a myth to me.

I used the stevia I had in a batch of chocolate chip cookies and I used it to sweeten up oatmeal(just to let you know). I usually stay away from artificial sweeteners and just opt for the real thing, but when it came to stevia and so many people raving about how great it was I decided to try it ,but in the end it was all hype to me.

It's true, Cereal, all

It's true, Cereal, all scientific and medical research on the subject states splenda is perfectly safe. I hate all the weird stuff that comes up against it.

I thought so azelma it

I thought so azelma it sounded like a scare tactic from the whole food purists ," You must eat only natural whole foods are you die!" , you know one of those kind of lines .
