Pacific Gold Hot and Spicy Beef Jerky!

hungry waif's picture

You may have noticed i've been a little inconsistent with my posts which i used to do daily. Well its finals week in culinary school and my dog had a stroke (she's old and its very hot here in LA).  So this called for a costco run for some cheap-o fans (because we rarely rely on fans here in "perfect 72 degrees" whether in la) and some other impulse buys that are unavoidable at this mega-sample-a-thon store.  I didn't realize this but my dad must have been lured by the jerky because i noticed a huge case of this hot and spicy variety from Pacific Gold. an 1oz serving is 90 caloires, 1 g fat, 6 g carbs, 5 g sugars, and 12g protien.  Obviously, being jerky, this is a good snackl if you are trying to get more protein in your diet.  But i dont like that the second ingredient is brown sugar.  Wouldn't i be better off with a cookie??? i figure if i am going for sugar, i'll go for fruit or you know, a cookie! So i am a little irritated by that. plus, its fairly high in sodium (480 mg per serving).  Taste (because thats important too!), really yummy and definetly spicey (although not at first, its like those trick candles, it only kicks in a few seconds after hitting your taste buds).  Overall grade: B.  I prefer the JuJu Jerky (which i reviewed a few months ago, check out the archives) for nutritional and taste reasons, but this did taste good although i would have liked it to be a little healthier since its touting to be healthy all over the package.

The sugar doesn't look all

The sugar doesn't look all that bad to me ,and the sodium would be beneficial to anyone like me who tends to lose a lot of water when he works out . If I can find these I'll definitely give them a try.

Good lick with your finals ,and hope your dog feels better.

I hope your doggy is ok. I

I hope your doggy is ok. I love my old dog.

I love beef jerky. I make my own. They probably went heavy on the brown sugar to offset the saltiness or spice. This sounds really interesting.

Its funny, I've always loved

Its funny, I've always loved my dog, but as she got older, i think my love for her has grown ten fold. old dogs dont need training, they know how to walk themselves, they dont annoyingly bark too much because they are too tired to bother, they are just really relaxing to have around. I wouldn't care much about the sugar, because its at least real sugar and not some HFCS chemical, but its just i've tasted many jerkys with less sugar and not all them need it. i dunno sometimes i think an item screams it needs sugar, and sometimes i feel its totally in the wrong place. my grandmother pours sugar on strawberries and other fruits and that really bothers me... Even on super sweet fruit like bananas!

I see what you mean about

I see what you mean about the sugar , and yeah it does seem kind of unwarranted, but who knows it might not have tasted good without it .

beef jerky...

is one of my newest snacks, as inspired mby MisFit. I don't watch my sugar but I AM trying to get more protein and this is a good way...altho when I first opened the bag, it reminded me a bit of how dog food smells (admittedly, I bought my first bag at Office Maz so who knows what is going on.)

So sorry about your pooch - I'll thinking of you both.

yea, my dog gets these

yea, my dog gets these jerky-esque treats too that remind me of my human jerky as well. Another good jerky to try is salmon jerky, high in those omega fatty acids and protien.

I enjoy the tofurky jerky

I enjoy the tofurky jerky myself, it's actually pretty tastey.
