nutritious junk

Rants of the month!
June 29th, 2008 by hungry waif
last month i talked about MickyD's new biscuit sammie and slamming Britney spears for being at not so hollywood weight. This month, a few other things grinded my gears:
-If you've been to times square recently, have you paid a visit to that guitar/underwear wearing cowboy? aka the "naked cowboy". He's suing Mars (the company that makes M&M's) saying that they ripped him off in their adds (btw, I love their adds with people as M&M's! I'd personally be honored to be an M&M!). But ny mag did a little piece about him and i must say, i think this guy is a bit image obsessed and a bit eating disordered. Of course he's a man, so no one makes a big deal of it, but this is what he mentioned in the article, "My goal, which is already achieved, is to have the very bottom of my back look dimply if I’m leaning back and squeezing my butt. I’ve done lunges for years and years, and now it’s a hard-as-rock, striated ass. Ten years ago, I had literally no ass. If I got heavier I had a big, huge bubble butt. I squeeze 1,000 butts a day — they’re all flat. Even with a girl that looks good — if I squeeze and it’s complete goo, that’s not going to look good". He goes on to mention he eats basically veggies a chicken all day and "avoids food after 8pm". then he mentions "My girlfriend and I sit down at 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. and religiously put on on-demand and eat Baked Lays potato chips and a protein bar. I basically put off my carbs all day to eat half a bag of Baked Lays with her — it’s zero fat and it’s essentially nothing but a plain baked potato. And a protein bar is essentially eating a chicken breast. It’s kind of like a treat.". I am not a nutritionist, but some how, I just dont think you can put a chicken breast next to a protein bar and call the equal. I dont know he just seems very superficial to me and his attitude towards food is getting on my nerves. read the full article and you may understand why http://nymag.com/daily/food/2008/06/the_naked_cowboy_treats_himsel.html. Maybe i am being too judgmental....
- Food costs are going up (along with gas) thanks to our economy taking a bit of a nose dive. But have you realized how much food we actually waste! a uk analysis discovered that brits throw out 4.4 million perfectly good apples daily! And with costco selling us HUGE packs of food, it leaves us only a little time before the perishables go bad. Here's what i recommend: buy the bagged, sometimes...i know it might seem cheaper to buy a whole broccoli crown for your stir fry because pound per pound, its cheaper than the precut stuff. But if you dont like the stems (which are perfectly fine to eat and are delicious, by the way), you'll end up wasting money in the long run. so if theres an item which you know you only need a part of and throw the rest away, try to find only THAT part. If costco is a hard habit to break, ask friends, neighbors, family members or even co-workers if you could split the costco bill and simply buy 6 pack of hearts of romaine (which is about 2.89) youll defetly save moolah if you only need one (a 3 pack one from safeway is 2.99!). And dont fret too much about organic. organic is great but sometimes its a bit pointless with fruit with think skins (think bananas, oranges, etc). splurge of fruit you love (it'll encourage you to eat it too!) and save of the thicker skin prodcuce.
-Oprah's preaching of her "quantum wellness" diet. The Queen of the US (because lets face it, she probably has more impact than the president), has been on this pr kick for this "quantum wellness" cleanse. apparently, she ate everything that came from her garden (with the exception of olive oil) and now that its over, feels "awakened" and more sensative to the world's food shortages. she might feel healthy (i dont know, if ask me i'd feel hungry after a strict diet like that). I am not going to poo poo her because i think she means well, using the global food shortage as a way to promote a diet book? hmm? sketchyhttp://www2.oprah.com/foodhome/food/cleanse/blog/blog_15.jhtml
He's definitely obsessed
He's definitely obsessed with his body image, but what would you expect with someone who's life ambition is to be a sideshow in Times Square. At least he openly admits to how much food dominates his life instead of acting like he was just gifted with really good genes and eats whatever he wants.
Don't forget frozen veggies/fruit and canned or both good choices they still pack lots of nutrition and can last a lot longer.
I can't begin to describe all the things that bother me about Oprah without going off on my own rant so I'll just say that the human body does a great job of cleaning itself and doesn't need so called "cleansing diets" to help it out.
i do appreciate that
i do appreciate that cowboy's honesty, i am sorta ranting on him too because of the m&m lawsuit, but hey, we all need money and guess this was an easy way to cash in.
At least he is being open
At least he is being open and honest about how disordered his eating is. He's a self obsessed idiot, but at least he isn't trying to hide how messed up he is. Of course I don't approve, but he isn't exactly in my radar, so don't really care what he's doing, also haven't seen the M&M commercial he is upset about.
As far as Oprah, she isn't that bad, she's worked really hard to get where she is today. If you read her blog she and her friends had a personal chef with them creating foods that did not deprive them of anything. There is nothing wrong with taking a week or 2 to detox and cut out processed junk, and meat/alcohol/caffeine every once in a while, do you really need that stuff to survive and feel satisfied? Some of those diets can get a bit crazy, but I don't think this one is all that bad. Of course it is easier if you have a chef, but more power to her that she can afford such a luxury.
Now, that said...I honestly need to ask, do you really not take any pride in your blog? People read this thing, I know you are busy with life and school but at least use spell check and fix your typos before you hit submit. It's not that hard, and it would give you just a little more credibility, it makes it really difficult to read and annoying trying to decipher just what you mean. Consider it.

I apologize for my terrible
I apologize for my terrible grammer, and your right, Ishould take this blog more seriously. I am not going to list you excuses as to why I dont spend more time writing quality content, but I will honestly make an effot to give more quality to the content. Cause lord knows, a second grader could have written this
Rants
Long time reader, first time poster!! The Pad Thai looks fab!
I can't say I've had the dubious pleasure of seeing or hearing the naked cowboy! I have seen plenty of street performers and really, they often are quite talented, or entertaining at worst.
As for Oprah, she's a special lady! Not perfect, but has made a huge contribution to our world, far beyond what most of us could only dream of doing.
I still am rather shocked
I still am rather shocked that this woman has so much power over public opinion. Its incredible, if oprah likes it, the people like it. At least she's using that power for the greater good...
I just wanna know...
why i never see this guy when I'm in NY? Then again I'd prolly run screaming - he and his doubled-up undies freak me out.
leslie, i am more scared
leslie, i am more scared he'll pinch my nearly-non-existing butt. I lived in the city for about three months a couple of summers ago and i actually tried to avoid times square. But when i did go (hey, all the great shows are there) I recall i did see him actaually , but i was more interested in getting my tasti d-lite from the huge times square branch than giving the cowboy a visit.
Oprah is a special lady ,but
Oprah is a special lady ,but in the special sheep herder kind of way .
Thank you for acknowledging
Thank you for acknowledging my comments. I really do like your blog and you seem like a really awesome person! I just haaaaaaaate bad spelling and typos, especially in a public blog. I think it'd make the information you deliver sound more .. authoritative? or like the intelligent person we know you are. I'm not gonna get any more into it, but you know what I mean.
As for Oprah, again, look at where she came from, and what she's worked towards? She might have a strong hold on the American public, but she really uses her money and power for good. I think it outweighs the bad, especially since she seems to push the things she really believes in. So what if people put their trust in her. I think she's a pretty awesome lady.
Oprah on MadTV
I am sorry, I love what Oprah does and everyone she has touched and help and stuff, but EVERYTIME I see her, the only thing I can think about is the spoof they did of her on Mad TV. The one where she is interviewing CRAZY NUTS Tom Cruise, and he starts jumping on the damn couches. HAHA. Its freakin hilarious.
And about all the typos......who cares? I love what you have to say....not how you punctuate it. You write probably how you talk. I do that too...
My rant is on the new single servings of SPAM! Ugh...how completely gross are those?? Spam should just stay in Hawaii were people love it.
Another rant....Cream of wheat is almost $6.00 a box here in CA. WTF???
